Last-Minute Reminder: Foot Village Tonight!

Be sure to get to Cairo on-time tonight (8 PM)for sets by locals Footwork and USF before the night's estimable entree: the legendary Foot Village of sunny Los Angeles! This will be their first Seattle show in nigh on two years, and if their last jaunt through town gives any indication, it will be incredibly memorable. RSVP on Facebook now. Remember: all of Foot Village's concert proceeds are going to Japan earthquake relief efforts.

Foot Villagehttp://footvillage.org

Foot Village are a thunderous drum-n-shout assembly from Los Angeles – a thick forest of whirling limbs beating out rhythms for whispers and hollers to leap and dive through. Featuring members of Gang Wizard, Friends Forever and the infamous International Voice of Reason, Foot Village are pure hardcore spirit without the spark of electricity. Erecting civilization with drums and voices alone, Foot Village are a concept band about the first nation built after the foreseeable apocalypse. Don’t get this self-imposed restraint confused with some neo-luddite stance however, as Foot Village only want to inspire others with the wide potential of rock music. When pretense has been banished, freedom can take wing and the doors can be flung open to everyone. Foot Village is a nation unlike any other and only by visiting can you really know.

This Weekend's Concert Action

Cairo's got a stellar line-up ready for this Spring Break weekend. For starters, Friday night we play host to LA's legendary Foot Village. On this "Totally Tour Tour," the band has elected to donate all proceeds from shows to the Japan Relief Fund established by the Boredoms' Shinji. Opening for Foot Village are USF and the fast-rising trio Footwork, which features members Secondary, Haunted Horses, and Wet Paint DMM (RIP).

Saturday night looks to be just as special, as it will be the release party for Secret Colors' new Lunar LP, which has been pressed to vinyl by Belgian imprint Aguirre. Opening are Firehouse faves Masters and Johnson and Zephyrs, with Firehouse impresario Casey Catherwood assisting Secret Colors with extra axe-work during his sure-to-be cosmic set.

RSVP to Friday's show here, and Saturday's here.

Poster for Saturday's Show is the Stranger's "Poster of the Week"

Props to our pal Dale Metteer, who's design for Saturday's Cairo concert with King Dude, PWRFL Power, Fables, and Posse is the Stranger's "Poster of the Week!" It certainly is a sharp design.

"Sometimes—sometimes—it's great to come across a poster image that makes you unsure of just what exactly you're looking at. This photo collage by Dale Metteer is an excellent example, drawing you into its strange little world."

Who are Footwork?

This Friday, there's a great show going down at Cairo with Weed, Mega Bog, and Secret Colors that doubles as the Seattle debut of new trio Footwork. Just who are Footwork, anyway?
Footwork is a local trio comprised of Taylor Wingett (Secondary), Myke Pelly (Haunted Horses), and James Scheall (Wet Paint DMM, Half Gift). Their sound is—perhaps unsurprisingly—not unlike a weird, mutant hybrid of Haunted Horses’ grand guignol and Wet Paint DMM’s singularly clanging brutality. The bass and guitar shriek, stab, and throb with the distorted angularity of German Expressionism, and Pelly’s thunderous jungle drumming rolls and rattles throughout the band’s rapidly-shifting song structures with positively tidal force.

We're really looking forward to seeing these guys live. So should you! To RSVP to the event, click here.

Another Show Review: Friday's Megabats, Hair and Space Museum, and High Wolf show

The Stranger's Dave Segal had some nice things to say today about Friday's night's psychedelic showcase featuring local bands Megabats, Midday Veil side project Hair and Space Museum, and enigmatic French jammer High Wolf:

"High Wolf only did three pieces in 30 minutes (I greedily wanted at least three hours), but they filled the tiny space with strange radiances and rhythmic undulations. The whole thing—mesmerizing hand percussion loops, guttural utterances garbled into alien textures, wah-wah’d and flanged guitar humidity, and Chambers’ Univox and Juno-60 keyboard coloration—was made up on the spot by two guys who’d never met before. Though frustratingly short, the performance thoroughly entranced."

Read his full review on Line Out. This weekend's shows were both momentous, in volume and in quality.

Purple and Green Show Review

There's already a review of last night's performance by Purple and Green (aka Adam Forkner/White Rainbow and Justin Green) online at the Seattle Weekly's "Reverb" blog.

Eric Grandy writes:
"J Green stood to his side, mic in hand, singing and doing dance moves seductive enough to move an art gallery full of stiff-limbed indie kids into hands-in-the-air revelry...
Forkner played keys, triggered the rhythm tracks, and manipulated J Green's vocals, adding delay or looping samples on the fly. At the set's peaks, he would send the songs into an almost-screaming psychedelic pitch, synths ping-ponging between speakers, noise and feedback and delay swelling ecstatically."

You can read his full review here. Last night's show was a special one--maybe the loudest ever at Cairo, with TWO PA systems on full blast and an impeccable mix by Brain Fruit's Jon Carr. We will update as/if more reviews/photos/videos come in.

This Just In: Panabrite to Join High Wolf for Friday's Show

Friday's sure-to-be-awesome concert with High Wolf, Hair and Space Museum (members of Midday Veil), and Megabats will also feature local synth guru Norm Chambers aka Panabrite. Panabrite's put out some great material on local cassette label Gift Tapes, as well as way-cool imprints like Bum Tapes and Digitalis (who released his stunning, hypnotic Contemplating the Observatory).

Chambers will be contributing to High Wolf's must-see set, adding some local flavor and far-out synth textures. High Wolf operates behind a nigh-impenetrable veil of mystery, so it's remarkable word about this guest appearance was able to get out.

Gift Tapes founder Jason Anderson has described Panabrite's music as a "submerged journey toward a glowing pearl," and said of a recent live set that Chambers "[created] some truly vintage new age scores to a fantasy landscape degraded on VHS.”

The Road Goes Ever On echoed this sentiment, saying Panabrite "makes electronic music that could score 1970’s National Geographic films of coral reefs and deep sea exploration."

This is great news, and if you'd like to hear some of Panabrite's trippy sounds for yourself, Contemplating the Observatory is available as a free download from this link. We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday--it's going to be a mind-expanding experience.

HIGH WOLF//\\HAIR AND SPACE MUSEUM/\\MEGABATS

Portable Shrines presents: FRIDAY FEB. 4th, 8 pm, $7

UPDATE: Abe Vigoda, Wild Nothing show moves to Vera

BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS

First the bad news: the Abe Vigoda, Wild Nothing & M. Women show at Cairo is sold out.

Now the good news: due to overwhelming interest (rabid really) for this show, and the relative limitations of Cairo's geography, the Bands, Cairo & and the Vera Project have teamed up to make this show three times larger, by moving it to the Vera Project.

We know you are sad that you won't be swapping sweat and secret glances with the bands at Cairo, where everyone is on stage, but we also know you'll be stoked to learn that your pals without tickets can still go, since Vera can offer a much larger capacity.

We are bummed. How often do you get to see two bands THIS big play in a space no larger than your living room? Not very often. Cairo has always been about promoting Seattle, though, and we'll continue to make decisions based on what's best for Seattle, the bands that play here, and the fans that want to see them play. In this case, it was obvious that more—MANY MORE—people wanted to see these three bands than we'd be able to accommodate, and where better to move it to than Vera, the reigning grand-daddy of all-ages music venues in the Seattle area.

SOME QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE:

1. "I've already purchased a ticket for the show at Cairo, WTF?" Whoa, easy...we will be handing the Will Call sheet over to Vera, and your ticket(s) will be honored. Just show up with your ID, and let them know you purchased tickets through Cairo.

2. "I live in the basement of Cairo, and that's why I wanted to see the show there, can I get my money back, WTF?" Yes, totally, though you'd be an idiot to not see this show. Come into Cairo before Feb. 26th and we'll give you your money back.

3. "Will this happen to future Cairo shows? How do I know you won't move the next show, WTF?" This is the first time we've ever sold advance tickets, so in the future if you show up for an event the night of, and there is a note on the door stating "We've moved the Stephanie/Secret Colors/U show to the Paramount Theater," then you'll know we've done it again.

4. "I live in the basement of Cairo, and I haven't gotten my ticket yet, but I was excited to get my ticket at Cairo cause it's just upstairs, can I still buy my ticket for the Abe Vigoda & Wild Nothing show, now sponsored by Cairo, at The Vera Project, while I'm at Cairo, WTF?" Yes, we will still sell tickets for this event, as it is a Cairo sponsored show being held at the Vera Project. You can of course buy tickets directly through the Vera Project starting Tuesday, February 1st at HERE.

Any other lingering questions can be sent directly to our booking intern, Ian Judd, at cairobooking@gmail.com. His favorite color is blue, and he recently fell in love with a dolphin pillow case he found at the bins. Thanks.

Who are Purple & Green?

Saturday, February 5th, Cairo's ultra-psychedelic weekend continues (on the heels of the prior night's mind-opening High Wolf show hosted by Portable Shrines) with a stellar 4-band bill featuring locals Punishment (aka S. Funkee), Brain Fruit, U.S.F., and Portland mega-jammer Adam Forkner/White Rainbow's latest project, Purple & Green.

A collaboration between Forkner and soul singer Justin Green, Purple & Green resuscitate old-school R&B, hip-hop, and funk stylings with uncanny precision, delivering them in a typically off-kilter, consciousness-altering Forkner style. One of their tracks, "Right Here," was recently shared on Pitchfork's forkast and elsewhere on the net, and their myspace has a bevy of other solid tracks (we recommend the three-way oddity "Tell Me," which boasts the weirdest Bradford Cox cameo you'll ever hear). Have a listen, start getting psyched for Saturday's show, and don't forget to RSVP on facebook.

Photo and Jewelry TRUNK SHOW this FRIDAY!

Photos by Lauren Max & Jewelry by Elizabeth Patterson. GONNA be GOOD. Come by between 8-11 pm

Who are Half Gift?

This Saturday, Cairo and local label Highfives and Handshakes present an excellent night of music featuring Portland's Psychic Feline, Grave Babies, and brand-spanking-new Seattle group Half Gift. Just who are Half Gift, anyway? Fans of the Seattle DIY circuit may recognize some of its players...

Half Gift is a new Seattle quartet featuring members of two beloved and defunct (or on-hiatus) DIY acts. The lineup includes James Schaell (Wet Paint DMM) on guitar and back-up vocals, Jessica James (Eel Eater) on drums, Samantha Pease on bass, and Maria Russell as the band’s lead vocalist. Half Gift’s drearily pretty sound is extremely Northwestern, with melancholic, chorus-lacquered guitar refrains repeating ad infinitum between ethereal, airy vocals and a locked-in rhythm section. The drumming is more varied and daring than Eel Eater’s was, and the guitar is less herky-jerky and more sentimental than Wet Paint DMM’s scalene squeaks and stabs. I predict lots of people will be smitten with their “In Gloom,” a song whose title winks towards Nirvana but which is musically more akin to a hybrid of the swirling broodiness of ‘80s dreampop and the Ronettes (the beat to “In Gloom” is only the latest in a long and storied history of variations on the indelible percussive pattern from “Be My Baby”).

The awesome poster you see above was done by Half Gift's Sam Pease. See you on Saturday!

A Friendly Last-Minute Reminder

Tonight, Craft Spells perform at Cairo along with buzzed-about local trio Seapony, Secret Colors (who will be debuting excellent new visual accompaniment), and Hausu. It will be wall-to-wall good times and we hope to see you there. 8 PM, All-ages--you know the drill.

If you're unfamiliar with Hausu (they're practically newborn, as far as bands go), have a listen to "The Haze" on Bandcamp, and peep the description below.

Hausu is the project of Reed College undergrads in Portland, Oregon. They take their name from the surreal and exceptionally bizarre 1977 Japanese horror film by Nabuhiko Ôbayashi, though there’s nothing fearsome or shocking about their reverb-soaked sound (one is reminded more of Hausu’s lush “magic hour” backdrops and pervasive dreamlike haziness). Frontman Ben Funkhouser first rose to prominence with his basement-jammer/afro-punk band Herr Jazz, and other members hail from indie act Young Friends. Ben describes Hausu as a combination of Bruce Springsteen and Kate Bush, as performed by Orange Juice or Pavement. The youthful band was recently featured on KEXP’s “Music That Matters” podcast.

Seapony, Hausu Profiled by Seattle Times

The Seattle Times' Andrew Matson (friend of Cairo, all-around smart guy) has a piece up today about Portland band Hausu and local twee-trio Seapony. Both bands will perform at Cairo with Craft Spells and Secret Colors this Friday, Jan. 21st (it will be Hausu's Seattle debut).

Seapony's version of twee has four-chord guitar progressions, catchy single-string hooks, breathy female singing and real-sounding drum machines.

"They've altered the twee canon so slightly, that they've made it new again," says Funkhouser of Seapony.

You can read the full article here. While it doesn't mention Cali act Craft Spells, you may already be familiar with his danceable bedroom pop. If not, check out this cute fan video made with footage of Anna Karina from Vivre Sa Vie:

Thanks to Everyone Who Came Out This Weekend

Both Friday and Saturday's shows were brimming with good times and totally packed--Saturday night's concert with Case Studies, Orca Team, and Charles Leo Gebhardt IV may have been the biggest Cairo show yet.

The Seattle Times' Andrew Matson posted a solid reviewof Case Studies' set which you can read here, and he captured some video from the performance which you can view below.

Orca Team wowed the crowd with their cover of The Intelligence's "The World is Not a Drag," which had been previously documented on video by the Seattle music blog The Finest Kiss. Here's a taste of what you missed if you didn't make it out:

If you have any photos or videos from either of the weekend shows, feel free to chime in in the comments section. We're going to be trying to post whatever pics or vids are out there whenever we find them.

Listen to a Cover of Orca Team's "Shane" and Get Pumped

On Saturday, January 15th, Portland retro-pop band Orca Team will perform at Cairo along with Jesse Lortz's new band, Case Studies, and the estimable Charles Leo Gebhardt IV. It's gonna be a truly rad show.

Some readers might be less familiar with Orca Team, despite the fact that they come up to Seattle for gigs pretty regularly. A good starting point might be the bitter ballad "Shane," from their self-released 2010 full-length Let it Go.

It was recently covered live by their SF pals Future Twin, to great results.

Keep checking the Cairo blog for more updates on this upcoming show.

Ghost to Falco to Perform on 1/14 with a Full Band!

I recently had the opportunity to interview Dragging an Ox Through Water's Brain Mumford and Ghost to Falco's Eric Crespo for the Weekly Volcano (the article will appear this coming Thursday online and in print). While I was getting deep with those two dudes--who play Cairo on Friday, January 14th with Witch Gardens and the inimitable U--Crespo dropped some knowledge on me about his plans for the show.

While historically Ghost to Falco has been a solo project, on the 14th, Crespo will be joined by Ryne Warner (of Ohioan and Castanets) on bass and lap steel and Bud Wilson (Aan) on drums and backing vocals. Should be epic.

Have you watched Cairo's big MTV cameo yet?

Some of you may already be hip to the "$5 Cover" series that MTV commissioned a little while back. They hired awesome Seattle director Lynn Shelton (Humpday, My Effortless Brilliance, one of the best episodes of Mad Men's fourth season) to craft a loose narrative spotlighting various Seattle musicians (e.g. Sean Nelson and THEE Satisfaction) and neighborhoods and venues around town.

Cairo is featured in Episode Three, which you can stream at this link. Check it out!

Kind Words for "The Cold Jungle" Cairo Comp.

Last week, Seattle Times music blogger Andrew Matson gave another ringing endorsement for Cairo's Cold Jungle compilation, which was released this past fall in conjunction with the Expo 88 music festival.

Dig it:

"Tough to find a more vital Seattle album in 2010 than "Cold Jungle," which compiles tracks by guitar- and synthesizer-based acts who congregate at Cairo, the tiny Capitol Hill retail space that doubles as a silk-screening studio and triples as a performance venue.

The Cairo scene represented on "Cold Jungle" focuses on experimental music that prioritizes groove and mood over formal songwriting, and that's enough of a theme to make a cohesive album. The mood sure does swing, though."

For more of Matson's observations (the record's "all about momentum"), hit this link.

Copies of The Cold Jungle are available on vinyl, cassette, and digipak CD at Cairo both in-store and online (duh), Wall of Sound in Capitol Hill, Ballard's Sonic Boom records, and the Easy Street Records on Queen Anne. Copies are also distro'd through Deathbomb Arc, Mexican Summer's store in NYC, and Olympia's Phantom City Records.

A Friendly Last-Minute Reminder

Tonight, Cairo hosts three awesome acts: King Dude, Oak Rot, and Pilgrimage. Here’s what you need to know about ‘em:

King Dude is the solo project TJ Cowgill, front(mad)man of local death metal outfit Book of Black Earth. His King Dude sets are acoustic, but lyrically and spiritually heavy in their own way. You may know Cowgill from his occasional posts on the Stranger’s Line Out music blog, his stylish work for/at Actual Pain, or his gloomy, commanding performance at this year’s Expo 88 Music Festival.

Oak Rot are like-minded Pac NW post-metal soundscapers, and you can get a taste of their most recent cassette release (on sale tonight, probs) for free at this link. These dudes will be cruising up to Snoqualmie to scope out all the Twin Peaks filming locations tomorrow, so be sure to give them a proper sendoff tonight.

Pilgrimage is doomy metal from Portland expat Wolf Carr (We Safari, I Am the Internet), an old homie of the Cairo management with enough supernatural talent to scare any would-be warlocks into prolonged hibernation.

Tonight’s show starts at 8 PM, don’t be late.

Adorable New Witch Gardens Video - "Lifeguard"

Stay posted for more details on that upcoming show...

A Bold New Partnership!

New partners in crime. Left to Right: Cairo booker/music intern Ian Judd and blogger Jason Baxter.

As a longtime fan and supporter of Cairo, I’m very stoked to announce that I’ll now be contributing to the Cairo blog, making sure it’s updated regularly with show announcements, band previews, aggregated content like videos and photos from past Cairo events, and anything else related to Seattle’s finest vintage store/venue space. Some of you may be familiar with my blogging for the Stranger’s Line Out music blog, or my music coverage for Tacoma’s the Weekly Volcano. Absolutely none of you will be familiar with my writing for the Edmonds-Woodway Wireless newspaper from 2003-2005.

Cairo’s got a lot of exciting stuff going on right now, and the next two months in particular are going to be chock full of insane shows that I can’t wait to start spilling the beans on.

With that little introduction now out of the way, it’s time I got started spreading the word…

Positive vibes,
